The Importance of Local Businesses

In the United States of America alone, there are 30.7 million small businesses. According to statistics done by the Small Business Administration in 2019, this accounts for 99.9% of all U.S. based businesses. As a result, 1.5 million jobs are created annually and account for 64% of the new jobs created in the United States. In light of recent events with the novel coronavirus, it is more important than ever to support small, local businesses in your community to help them through this difficult time. When you support a local business, your money doesn’t go to a billionaire who has just bought his third house. You directly help the owners, employees and their families, and the economy of your local community.  When shopping local, you can be sure that your hard-earned money stays right where you spend it. On average, $68 of every $100 spent at a local business stays within the community. When compared to the larger businesses and corporations, only $43 out of every $100 stays within the local business economy (grasshopper.com). As we live in a time where neighbors must call upon neighbors to help and heal our community, it is important to not forget local businesses that rely on their customers and relationships with your mom-and-pop shop down the street.
